Mujb’ab’l yol has been fighting to legalize community radio stations in Guatemala since the peace agreement was signed in 1996 and via “Doble Via”, their radio station, and 27 other community radio stations in the western part of Guatemala, to teach people (with special focus on the indigenous) about human rights, freedom of speech, child abuse, and other social and political themes.
They also report on current events and governmental actions in an effort to raise political consciousness in an unbiased way (they are not affiliated with any political party or movement).
The goal in setting up a “Training Center” (Centro de Capacitación) is to provide a permanent location where the association can organize classes, courses and workshops to train young people who are interested in learning the basic techniques of editing and broadcasting radio programs, as well as to teach the experienced editors and broadcasters the newest techniques of recording and operating in order to improve the quality of their programs.
Other subjects will also be taught in the center to enrich the knowledge of participants and to enhance the contents of the radio programs. With help of local and international volunteers, language and computer classes will also be organized for surrounding communities. All these courses will have participation fees associated with them and with this income; they will be able to run the association and become self-financed.
A small museum about the Voz Popular (guerilla radio during the civil war) will be set up in the same building. Alberto Ramirez (“Tino”), the president of the association who fought 14 years during the civil war and was responsible for ensuring the broadcasting of Voz Popular, is still in possession of most of the equipment that they used. They are not only the witness to history but the storytellers of what had happened during this difficult period. |
